Brian Dougans and Garry Cobain began their musical partnership and friendship in Manchester, in the mid 1980s whilst the two were studying at Manchester University. Dougans had already been making electronic music for some time when they first began working in various local clubs. In 1988, Brian embarked on a project for the Stakker graphics company. The result was Stakker Humanoid. Garry collaborated with Brian on the accompanying album.

In the following three years the pair produced music under a variety of aliases, releasing it through the label Jumpin & Pumpin. Stakker Humanoid re-entered the UK chart in 1992, followed by the breakthrough classic ambient dub track Papua New Guinea, which was also the first release under the Future Sound of London moniker. After releasing the album Accelerator to critical acclaim they signed to Virgin Records. With their new found contract they immediately began to experiment and the result was the Tales Of Ephidrena album, released under the Amorphous Androgynous alias.

Lifeforms followed in 1993. The new work was almost entirely free of percussion and was truly ambient across both discs. It was a top 10 hit in the UK album chart, and is still hailed as one of the greatest ambient electronica albums ever devised. Having pioneered the use of ISDN for music broadcasts to radio stations this year also saw the release of ISDN, it featured live broadcasts FSOL had made to various radio stations worldwide.

In 1996 they released Dead Cities. The new material was a mixture of ambient textures and hard gritty dance music. Promotion for the album culminated in a headline slot at the Essential Festival in Brighton in 1998. Once again utilising ISDN they played the gig from their studio in London.

Around this time Garry became very ill from what was later diagnosed as lead poisoning from the old fillings in his teeth. This illness caused Garry to go on a voyage of self-discovery that took him to India for an extended period where he studied Eastern and Ayurvedic medicine, Yoga and Taoism.

From these travels and research Brian & Garry started to get the feel for a new direction in their music. They both got into the spirit of early psychedelia and leftfield 60’s/70’s rock and saw the potential of forging these new influences with the new technology and production expertise they had acquired. The resultant album, The Isness, released under the Amorphous Androgynous moniker, was a cosmic mix of psychedelia, folk, big band, orchestral, eastern classical and electronic which also had an exotic mix of musical collaborators including Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart/Jeff Buckley), Herbie Flowers (David Bowie, Lou Reed) and revered Indian classical sitarist Baluji Shrivastav.

With the release of Alice In Ultraland they focused the Amorphous Androgynous modus operandi, allowing it to exist and flourish fully on its own terms. Recorded over a three year period and expanding on The Isness’ psychedelic/electronic soundscape, it is a samplerdelic funkoid roktronic cosmic ambient oozescape, merging the sonic with the lyric, the beat with the beat-less, the classic rock with the epic freeform roll. The album careers and morphs through virtually every musical genre as it twists its way from the imaginations of Dougans & Cobain; from the Miles Davis mutoid jazz of The Witch Hunt to the electro funkadelic twist of The Prophet, the calming ambience of Another Fairy Tale Ending to the dark, epic Pink Floydisms of The World Is Full Of Plankton.

Following this release Brian and Garry set up the digital portal FSOLDigital, which has become the home to a wide array of material. “FSOLDigital is the electronic brain made reality. It gives us the freedom to do whatever we want, when we want. We are at the beginning of something and we are excitied by its possibilities.”

Brian and Garry are currently working on brand new Future Sound Of London material as well as some soundtrack work. They continue to provide their idiosyncratic radio shows to stations across the globe and are looking at new ways to bring the FSOL experience to the live arena.

It will be released on March 9th. Noel recently had this to say about it on the Oasis blog:
By the way, there’s gonna be a very special release coming your way soon. Remember that “Amorphous Androgynous” lot I was telling you about? Well, they’ve done a “Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble” mix of “Falling Down”. It’s 22 mins long. I’ll repeat that, TWENTY-TWO MINUTES LONG!! I fully expect 50% of you not to have the attention span to deal with something like that but the rest of you, I hope, will be blown away. It’s a staggering piece of music. Monumental even. All superlatives will apply.
